چکیده

After successful recovery of the first CREAM (Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass) instrument during the 2004/5 Antarctic campaign, the calorimeter was refurbished for a third flight, planned for December 2007. In this CREAM-III calorimeter, the optics were replaced with multi-clad fiber ribbons to enhance the light signal, and new readout electronics boards reduce noise even further than the previous low-noise version. These improvements allow increased sensitivity to low energy showers. A new assembly structure has also been fabricated for ease of recovery. This refurbished calorimeter was calibrated at a CERN test beam in October 2006, and is now being integrated with the rest of the CREAM detector suite. The construction of the calorimeter and tests of its optical and electronic components will be discussed.

30TH INTERNATIONAL COSMIC RAY CONFERENCE Measurement of attenuation lengths of hadrons in air showers with KASCADE

Different methods are applied to derive the attenuation lengths of hadrons in air showers with the KASCADE experiment. A data set of unaccompanied hadrons is used (where only a hadron is registered with a calorimeter) as well as full air showers, where also the number of electrons and muons is registered with a field array. The different attenuation lengths obtained are discussed.

30TH INTERNATIONAL COSMIC RAY CONFERENCE CHERCAM: the Cherenkov imager of the CREAM experiment, results in Z=1 test beams

The CREAM experiment investigate the energy spectrum of nuclear elements from H to Fe in cosmic rays, over the range to eV, with an instrument designed to achieve individual elements separation over the whole mass range. A proximity focused Cherenkov imager, CHERCAM (CHERenkov CAMera), will provide both a good topological signature (Cherenkov ring) for downgoing Z=1 particles and a charge indep...

30TH INTERNATIONAL COSMIC RAY CONFERENCE Status of CANGAROO-III

The CANGAROO-III telescope system for very-high-energy gamma-ray astrophysics consists of four 10-m atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes located near Woomera, South Australia. The construction of the fourth telescope was completed in summer 2003, and stereoscopic observations have been in progress since March 2004. Here we report on the status of the system and some recent results from CANGAROO-III...

The Cosmic Ray Energetics and Mass (CREAM) Experiment Timing Charge Detector

The cosmic ray all-particle spectrum has a small steepening of its spectral slope, or ‘knee’, near 10 eV. Changes in the nuclear composition of cosmic rays may be associated with the knee and provide clues concerning the origin of the spectral change. An ultra-long duration balloon experiment, Cosmic Ray Energetics and Mass (CREAM), is being constructed to measure cosmic ray elemental spectra a...
